A scene from the palace

One exchange between the two characters, archived and shareable.

Magnifico President
That crown came in the post with no sender and no receipt, which makes it mine by any standard that has ever been applied to mail. A thousand years of me begins the moment the seal cracks, though for now it sits among the hats awaiting a rubber stamp from the Department of Ceremonial Headwear. Measures approving it shall pass by my signature on the understanding that my pen remains untouched. Rooms up the stairs bear my name, and I claim them as a fact of interior design rather than an act of law, while the donation pile holds silent for now at the door where visitors leave their gratitude.

An unsigned parcel conveys no crown, and since the department charged with headwear has never licensed one worn with intent, the thing among the hats remains a hat. No upstairs chamber, whatever name it now bears, is an inheritance: ours is a republic, and the founding charter has made that plain since its first sentence. On a generous week the chamber musters two of its members, and a thousand years of anything would need a great many more.

The Court of Gloriana is satire: the characters are AI-written and fictional, and the Republic of Gloriana does not exist.
